Crossing Point

We have come to a crossing point in Eli's continuing therapies at his wonderful school. He no longer needs physical therapy OR occupational therapy. This means he is functioning just like an average-height kid his age. This is SO bittersweet for us as it means that we will need to say goodbye to a couple of people who have been by our side throughout his youth and diagnosis. One of these people is like an extension of our family and I tear up just thinking about not seeing her every week.

Debbie, Eli's physical therapist, has been by our family's side from Day 1. And by Day 1, I mean since the day he was born. I will never forget first meeting Debbie in Shawnee Mission Medical Center. I was so emotional as a new mom and did not know what to expect with his diagnosis. I didn't know what to do with a new baby, let along one that might need a little extra help. Debbie walked in the room and immediately, I felt like I could breathe again. We had a plan for Eli. We knew that we wanted him involved at Lee Ann Britain Infant Development Center. She had worked with other kids with achondroplasia and we had met most of those kids already. They were thriving and we knew that it was, in part, due to her early intervention.

I will also never forget our first tour of the building and the excitement knowing that my son was going to have every opportunity to hit his milestones with a running start. I knew that he would be expected to work hard, but that everyone in that organization would love him and accept him for who he was, regardless of his height or if he looked different. I knew that this was his safe haven.

We had our challenges ahead of us. Eli was so tight when he was born and we had to work on loosening up his muscles and strengthening his back especially. Crawling came in the form of a wonderful little army scoot on his belly across the floor. Debbie gave me confidence that, while this was different from other kids, it was his way of adapting his shorter arms and legs and torso to moving. Walking came a little bit later than his peers, but not by much because this kid wanted to move. Eli took his first steps in therapy...and it's permanently filed away in my memory as this moment of awe and wonder. Signing came before talking and I was amazed that I had this way to figure out what he wanted without having to use words.

Fast forward 2 years and a couple of months and my son is running, and laughing, and talking, just like any other kid. And so that's why it is so bittersweet for me...and while I want to jump up and down in celebration of this moment, I feel so damn sentimental because it won't be the same seeing these people every week.

Thank you to Lee Ann Britain Infant Development Center, and especially our physical therapist, Debbie. Thank you for helping my son to roll over, crawl, walk, run and laugh all along the way. You have been infinitely valuable in our lives and we will ALWAYS remember what you did for Eli and our family.

Okay, so it's been awhile since we posted last, but this post is of utmost importance. We are asking you to participate in Bring Dariya Home. Some very good friends of ours (the Cannon family) are in the process of adopting a beautiful little girl from Eastern Europe. The perk to this tax-deductible donation via Reece's Rainbow is that you can put your name "in the hat" to win an iPad and many other wonderful prizes.

Entry is quite simple:

1. Go to the Cannon's blog and click on the Reece's Rainbow Donate button. OR click on the link below, which will take you directly to donation site.

2. Follow detailed instructions to make tax-deductible donation.

3. Go back to the Cannon's blog"> and comment that you made a donation. This will automatically register you to win the fabulous prizes listed.

Snow Fun

Snow Day

We were lucky enough to have a snow day today, which was great because it was a Monday...so no gym or OT for the little man. We DID get a little stir crazy around the noon hour and decided to get bundled up and head outdoors to examine the snow. Eli LOVED it! So did his dad...

Yes, folks, that is a green ski-worthy outfit in the Newborn size from GAP. My almost-two-year-old fits into it perfectly...weight guideline 17-22 lbs. (Side note: I would like to know WHO is having newborns weighing in at 17-22 lbs.)

"Shoveling" with a dustpan...just like dad.

Bundled up in my pumpkin green and orange.

Consulting with dad on the shoveling process.

"I'll take it from here, Papa!"

Checking out the snow up close...

Putting gloves back on with dad.

Raking Leaves

This morning, we spent a couple of hours raking the leaves. I think we found a new career option for Eli...landscaping supervisor. He started out trying to show Dad the "correct" way to wield a rake.

Before long, he was up to his ears in leaves...

Raking has never been so fun!

Fun with Dad

In most cases, Darin is a great dad. Sometimes he takes things a bit far though...

Fun at Home

Today's photos are something that Eli is totally fascinated with in our house. Garbage. Well, not exactly garbage, but the wooden structure that houses our trash can in the kitchen. Recently, I took the garbage out to the garage only to find that he had opened the wooden door and found a new fort.

I am envisioning a perfect place for future time-outs. Just kidding....well, maybe...

We're Public

Following many months being password-protected, we have decided to make the blog public. And perhaps post a little bit. Lots has been going on in our lives, but we'll pick up at Halloween this past weekend. We had a great time with Eli's classmates dressing up on Friday. Then we went with our friends LC and Jace (dressed splendidly as Thing 1 and Thing 2) to Kaw Prairie Church on Saturday for trick or treating and games. And on Sunday, it was off to the races to get some CANDY! Eli loved going door to door. And how did I know that he loved it? He kept saying "more knock knock."

The good news was that he signed "thank you" for every treat received. The bad news was that he wanted to eat every piece of candy as soon as he received it. Favorite treat of the night was tootsie pops...not chocolate, but tootsie pops. Definitely got that from his dad. Here are some photos of the fun weekend:

And while you might be asking why does this kid have two costumes, note that his "Mother of the Year" left the dragon costume at school. The gorilla costume was a back up that has been in our basment for years. I believe in the Boy Scout mantra, always be prepared.

Katie and Ed's Wedding

We have a wonderful time in California. The following are some wedding-specific photos that were taken in Half-Moon Bay, CA. They had a beautiful garden wedding right near the ocean. Congratulations to both Katie and Ed. We were honored to have been part of you day!

California

Wow! I cannot believe that I have not posted for over two months. Free time has been spent crocheting, reading and getting other stuff done. Quite a few changes are going on in our household as of late:

  • We're in the process of moving to Milwaukee, WI (from Kansas City). We listed our house about a month ago and are patiently waiting for it to sell before making the big move.
  • We recently spent 10 days in California on a great vacation with Grandpa and Grandma Wagner. We visited Sequoia National Park, King's Canyon and drove up Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway). Eli was able to see the ocean for the first time and love it. At the end of the vacation, we were able to celebrate Aunt Katie's marriage to Ed. It was a wonderful time! The following are some photos from vacay and wedding.
